The consumer thinks the check is real and believes it is OK to wire money or send money via gift cards for an essential, make-believe reason. In loan scams, con artists claim you need to give back money immediately as a step for building credit to obtain a bigger loan.
Tracey Taschereau, 48, holds gift cards she was asked to purchase in an account takeover scam at her home in Ypsilanti, Mich., Wednesday, September 12, 2018. She was trying to get a loan to cover bills and ended up in the red for more than $3,200 after she shopped for loans online. (Photo: Kathleen Galligan, Detroit Free Press)
Upset with herself, Taschereau sits in the living room of the home she moved to recently in Ypsilanti. She rummages through an envelope filled with Best Buy gift cards, notes she made talking to the people who promised a loan, paper copies of the bad checks and letters from the bank telling her that her account is past due.
As part of the first installment, scammers told Taschereau that she could keep about $45 now to pay some bills. That money, of course, wasn't real either. Yet she kept up contact with the scammers who kept contacting her, using her account number to make more phony deposits and demanding she buy more gift cards.

We all have those gift cards we just never used -- the ones for places you used to shop but don't anymore, or the gifts from a well meaning friend or relative who just doesn't know you as well as they think. Luckily, you don't have to just throw these gift cards out or spend them on things you'll never actually use.
There are plenty of places willing to buy gift cards, both online and in person. It's important to find someplace trustworthy so you don't end up giving your gift card away and getting nothing in return -- luckily, all the research here is done for you!
Target sells gift cards, of course -- but did you know they buy them as well You can bring your gift card to the electronics section of your local Target, and they'll give you an offer that you can accept or refuse.
Selling your gift cards in person might feel safer -- and gets you the cash quicker -- than selling online, but it's certainly not as convenient. If you'd rather go with the online option, don't worry -- you have plenty of websites to choose from.
One option to sell your gift card online is ClipKard. You can only sell physical gift cards, and you'll need to enter the gift card number (though not the PIN number) to get your offer. If you're happy with it, you can accept, ship the gift card off, and get paid!
With Raise, you can sell both physical and e-gift cards. You get to set the price and sell your gift card directly to another buyer, and there's no listing fees -- but when the card sells, Raise takes a 15% commission. You can sell partially used gift cards as well, though there's a minimum balance limit for those -- $10 for a physical card, and $5 for an e-gift card.
GameFlip is -- you guessed it -- a website for gamers to buy and sell gift cards (and other things as well). It prides itself on being at the top of the list when it comes to safety and preventing fraud. Similar to Raise, you can list your gift card yourself and choose the price, and they'll take a small cut once it sells.
Unfortunately, unlike most of the other options on this list, GameFlip doesn't offer the ability to cash out via PayPal. Instead, you'll have to use Wise, Payoneer, or Skrill -- or cash out in Bitcoin, if you're into cryptocurrency.
There's very few people who haven't heard of eBay -- it's one of the most popular ecommerce platforms that exists. Luckily, it's also a great place to sell gift cards. It's simple enough to list, and you can list up to 250 items per month for free. That said, eBay does take a cut of the final sale price, so make sure to keep that in mind.
If you're not happy with any of the offers you get, or it's just too much of a hassle, you do have other options to get rid of unwanted gift cards.Regift -- If you know someone who just loves that store or restaurant, you can save some money on the next holiday by giving them your unused gift card.Donate -- Some gift cards, especially food and clothing ones, can easily be donated to people who need them -- either directly or through an organization built for that.Return -- Some retailers will take gift card returns as long as they're unused. That said, you'll usually need the original receipt, so hopefully the person who gave you the gift card won't be too offended if you ask for it.
Items that do not qualify to earn points are Price Chopper, Market 32, and Market Bistro gift cards, alcohol, tobacco, money orders, Western Union, lottery tickets, postage stamps, entertainment tickets, bottle deposits, copy/fax services, taxes, and other items prohibited by law.
Items for which redemptions cannot be used are the purchase of Price Chopper, Market 32, Market Bistro gift cards, third party gift cards, prepaid phone cards, general purpose reloadable cards, alcohol, tobacco, money orders, Western Union, lottery tickets, postage stamps, entertainment tickets, bottle deposits, copy/fax services, taxes, pharmacy, and other items prohibited by law.
Sites like Raise operate as a sort of marketplace with the burden to sell the gift card placed on you. You'll be able to choose how heavily you want to discount your card, and you can view the discounts that others with similar gift cards are offering. You won't receive any money until someone buys your gift card.
That's a higher fee than many other sites, though Raise's strong reputation can make it worth the price for some. Selling gift cards for the first time can be a bit nerve-racking, after all. Raise offers two payout methods: ACH direct deposit and PayPal.
One of the best features of CardCash (and an advantage it has over Raise) is that it's pretty indiscriminate as to which gift cards it will buy from you. It follows standard practices, such as refusal to sell gift cards with expiration dates or promotional cards that can only be spent in certain areas. But the list of accepted merchants seems to be much larger than that of Raise. So even if your obscure gift cards don't yield a huge return, you'll at least get something.
The same way you can use sites like Raise and CardCash to sell your unwanted gift cards, you can use them to buy other people's gift cards at a discount. If you're planning to purchase discounted gift cards through these sites, be sure to use a credit card that will give you the maximum return for your spending. Gift card marketplaces won't fall into any bonus categories, so the best strategy is to spend on a card that gives you a respectable flat rate on everyday purchases, such as:
Enjoy 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards, our premier rewards program that lets you redeem rewards for cash back, travel, gift cards and more; 3% cash back on drugstore purchases and dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery service, and 1.5% on all other purchases
You can easily turn gift cards into cash (or more desirable gift cards) through reputable sites like Raise and CardCash. The site you choose will depend on the ease of sale and the type of gift card you have. You won't get full value for it, but that's still better than letting a gift card go unused.
Have you ever thought about what you could do with the extra cash from all those unused gift cards lying around Exchange them for cash, and enjoy yourself this summer! Here are some ideas to get you started:
