To be honest, I quite enjoyed this. First of all, it's good to see the character of Quentin Tarantino finally making it to the big screen: the film starts off as a small, lightly-detailed tale of a couple of thieves on the run from the police, but then turns into a darker, more twisted tale, with an interesting subplot about a career criminal's son, and an even more twisted version of The Killers, where a pair of serial killers take a soul-searching road trip through Mexico in search of a freshly-killed female victim (in short, it's a film about crime, but with a real twist). While this usually boils down to a film of contradictions, and isn't as surprising as I might have imagined, there are just enough moments of genuine shock and surprise that, for the most part, it manages to deliver what it sets out to do; and some genuinely brutal and nasty violence, most notably a good half hour of torture (the most graphic scene in the film) and some very brutal killing sequences, as well as an Oscar-winning performance from the usually reliable Bérénice Bejo. A good thriller.
The American
By far the best movie of 2011 was The American, by the same director who brought us Inglourious Basterds. This tale of a covert operation in the Washington DC area during the Cold War, and the secret sexual liaison between a CIA agent and the Russian housewife he is tasked with protecting, is a very smart and fast-paced spy thriller, and the best thriller to be released in the US in a long time. Matthew Fox shines as the injured agent, and while the use of the classic James Bond-like spy gadgets is very funny at times (especially in the climax), the heart of the film is an assured and realistic depiction of the psychological and emotional strain endured by the protagonist; and a brilliantly crafted tension-filled action thriller (the most dangerous moments in the film are not the shootouts, but the weight of the decisions being made, the angst of the characters and the knowledge of the inevitable outcome). It's also a pretty sexy film, with a great lead performance from Michael Shannon as the good-looking bad-ass, and a fine body count that makes you want to cheer.
