Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) version 3.18 and later includes the msupdate command-line tool. The msupdate tool can be used to start the update process for Microsoft applications produced for Mac, such as Office. The tool is primarily designed to give IT administrators more precise control over when updates are applied. You can download the latest version of MAU from this link.
msupdate works by using native XPC to communicate with the MAU daemon. On macOS 10.14 Mojave and later, you may see a privacy prompt when running msupdate for the first time. If you're using an enterprise management tool such as Jamf Pro, you should deploy a Privacy Preferences Policy Control (PPPC) payload to pre-approve access. Samples of such a payload can be downloaded from GitHub.
Microsoft AutoUpdate allows you to keep your software up-to-date automatically. This update to Microsoft AutoUpdate is part of Microsoft's continued effort to provide the latest product updates to customers. To receive future Office 2011 or Office 2016 updates, you must install this update.

4. Choose Check for Updates. This will let the software automatically check to see if your software is outdated. I have been noticing for weeks now OS X seems to be throttling my network downloads. In fact, I have been unable to download El Capitan because of this. I thought, since its affecting downloads, it must be something to do with how its connecting the Internet. Because I am not so familiar with the command line on the Mac, such as flush/dns on Windows, I researched if there was any alternative on for OS X. Came across Googles DNS solution.
In contrary to others on the forum, it did not fix the issue for me. So I went ahead and found the release notes of Microsoft AutoUpdate and found that it can be downloaded and installed separately from Office itself. The latest version can be found here. The release notes mentioned that Microsoft switched to a new CDN in the v4.40 release, which triggered me to try updating it manually before trying something else.
MAU has never worked on my Mac (over the last year at least). It always hangs with the progress bar at halfway with any of the Office updates. I always go downloads page: -gb/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-macYou can also d/l MAU here: -gb/officeupdates/release-history-microsoft-autoupdate
Microsoft AutoUpdate is an applet that keeps Microsoft Office and other Microsoft programs such as OneDrive, OneNote, and Teams up-to-date on your Mac. It comes bundled alongside most Microsoft applications, but you can also download and install it separately.
Additionally, Microsoft AutoUpdate can cause other issues that warrant disabling it. For example, it can interrupt you by requesting you to shut down apps during updates or fail during downloads when switching networks. It can also use up valuable resources and impede operating system performance.
I knew there was this article! thank you so much and F*CK MICROSOFT AUTOUPDATE, what a trash, how can they ignore so much the user preferences, it was impoooooossible to find where to put it off, jesus christ, even with 0 ZERO microsoft applications it kept bringing up this stupid autoupdate window, NO THANKS I RATHER STICK WITH PAGES, KEYNOTE and SLIDES
Thank you for the easy to follow instructions. I deleted the file and the annoying update balloon no longer appears when I open my docs. I use Word sparingly but the autoupdate gave me the creeps when I could not stop it.
You should also delete com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper from ~/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools, com.microsoft.update.agent.plist from ~/Library/LaunchAgents and com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist from ~/Library/LaunchDaemons
You need to go to /Library directory, at the root of your HD, and search "Microsoft autoupdate" on that location (which finds /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app on my system.
You can also download updates directly from the Microsoft website. One of the reasons some people prefer this is because multiple Macs need these updates and they do not want to bog down the network by downloading those same updates on each computer. Downloading them from the Microsoft website and transferring them to all other Macs via flash drive or over the local network can save many gigabytes in Internet traffic.
Also shown is the SHA1 hash for the install packages. You can use this to verify that the file you downloaded was the file Microsoft intended for you to get. Unfortunately, they do not provide this hash for the update packages, so if you want to be absolutely sure you got what you came for, get the install package instead. Both the install and update packages result in you getting the latest version of that app.
Special Offer Microsoft AutoUpdate virus may re-infect your Mac multiple times unless you delete all of its fragments, including hidden ones. I guess this problem affects only Microsoft Office apps directly downloaded from Microsoft and not from the Mac App Store - Microsoft AutoUpdate is required for the former whereas the latter would be kept up to date by the App Store - see Q5 of the linked article. If the issue persists, perhaps a viable resolution is to download the App Store version.

Now that we can talk to the helper tool, with some reverse engineering we can check if it has any promising function. Running class-dump against the binary /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper reveals that its functionality has been extended since 2018, it has more interfaces available through XPC. The MAUHelperToolProtocol describe the available functions we can call.
The Microsoft Edge Chromium, on the other hand, has an actual macOS version when it's used on Mac devices. Then you'll have to do that whenever users download Edge Chromium. It would be supplemented by Microsoft AutoUpdate.
Users will notice the program Microsoft AutoUpdate on the device when they have downloaded anything from Microsoft's apps on the PC. Although the program does not display on the Launchpad or elsewhere, it is downloaded and runs in the background. The tool, as its name suggests, updates Microsoft apps on any Mac device instantly.
Aside from adding more features, there still are various bug repairs and performance enhancement upgrades that are deployed immediately. So, if you had a strange malfunction by using a Microsoft program and it went gone after a while, Microsoft AutoUpdate most likely downloaded an updated version that fixed the problem. So why do people still want to uninstall Microsoft AutoUpdate on Mac?

I recommend you to start by downloading a recommended configuration file from docs.microsoft.com, at the same place you will also find a full configuration version. In the full configuration file you have keys and you have underlying settings. The keys is antivirusEngine, cloudService, edr and userInterface.
This one is a bit simpler to to, as Microsoft has published the config of this file for us (tcc.xml ) on docs.microsoft.com, and I have also published this in XML format for you do download on github.
I have set the configuration in my file to 4. automatic download updates, 5. keep the check for updates button enabled, 8. Update frequence is set to 180 minutes (default is 720), 9. disabled the insider checkbox and 11. send all telemetry. 2b1af7f3a8
