VB.net Get Size Of Folder And Or A Drive

Both these methods work fine. However they take lot of time to calculate the directory size if there are lot of sub-folders. e.g i have a directory with 150,000 sub-folders. The above methods took around 1 hr 30 mins to calculate the size of the directory. However, if I check the size from windows it takes less than a minute.
Big thanks @Jamie for Code and @Mathiasfk for translating to VB.net. I use it for my own Backup program which in default setting just backup the whole profile folder, it's a code which finally also is able to understand junction points and read more or less correct size. It's at least okay for Backup. :-)
The FileInfo and DirectoryInfo classes represent a file or directory and contain properties that expose many of the file attributes that are supported by the NTFS file system. They also contain methods for opening, closing, moving, and deleting files and folders. You can create instances of these classes by passing a string that represents the name of the file, folder, or drive in to the constructor:
I have an application which is running this routine repeatedly for a large number of folders. I'm wondering if there's a more efficient way to calculate the size of a folder with .NET? I didn't see anything specific in the framework. Should I be using P/Invoke and a Win32 API? What's the most efficient way of calculating the size of a folder in .NET?
I do not believe there is a Win32 API to calculate the space consumed by a directory, although I stand to be corrected on this. If there were then I would assume Explorer would use it. If you get the Properties of a large directory in Explorer, the time it takes to give you the folder size is proportional to the number of files/sub-directories it contains.
Your fourth problem is that a "file" (or directory) might in fact not even be a file (or directory):It might be a soft link (a "symbolic link" or a "reparse point") to some other file (or directory). That other file might not even be on the same drive. It might even point to something on the network, or it might even be recursive! Should the size be infinity if it's recursive?
Your fifth is that there are "filter" drivers that make certain files or directories look like actual files or directories, even though they aren't. For example, Microsoft's WIM image files (which are compressed) can be "mounted" on a folder using a tool called ImageX, and those do not look like reparse points or links. They look just like directories -- except that the're not actually directories, and the notion of "size" doesn't really make sense for them.
In this link -us/office/vba/language/reference/user-interface-help/size-property-filesystemobject-object there is a description of how to get the folder size directly using Visual Basic, without having to get a list of files and loop over them to add up their lengths.
Here is a routine for c# to use this method to output the sizes of all the folders in the given path. It recurses up to a specified level, examining subfolders whose size is larger than average in an attempt to find where storage use problems are caused.
Hi,Thank you, program did work for me but how would I change it if I want both total size of the folder (What I get using the above C# program) and then similarly I want size of each subfolder. I would really appreciate you help as I am a newbie. Thanks
I was using the following code to check the file size of a data file on my local machine. Now the data files have been moved to a mapped network drive and this code no longer works. What do I need to change or how do I access file size on a mapped drive?
You can add files and folders to OneDrive automatically from your PC without having to go to the OneDrive website. Files you add to OneDrive this way can be up to 250GB in size. (If you sign in with a work or school account, the maximum file size is 15GB.)
If you have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or a Mac, you can install the free OneDrive desktop app to upload files and folders to OneDrive automatically. Files you upload using the desktop app can be up to 20GB in size.
However you can set this to restrict rclone to a specific folderhierarchy or to access data within the "Computers" tab on the driveweb interface (where files from Google's Backup and Sync desktopprogram go).
In order to do this you will have to find the Folder ID of thedirectory you wish rclone to display. This will be the last segmentof the URL when you open the relevant folder in the drive webinterface.
This feature was implemented to retain photos capture date as recordedby google photos. You will first need to check the "Create a GooglePhotos folder" option in your google drive settings. You can then copyor move the photos locally and use the date the image was taken(created) set as the modification date.
The storage metrics page shows the size of each folder and file (including version history size). It is worth mentioning that the storage metrics page data is not real-time data! It takes a while for a background timer job to run and populate this data.
With the GetSpecialFolder method, by passing 0, 1 or 2 as an argument, you can get your Windows folder path (with files installed by the Windows operating system), your system folder path (with libraries, fonts, and device drivers) and temporary folder path (the folder that is used for storing temporary files), respectively.
The exFAT file system was introduced in 2006 and was added to older versions of Windows with updates to Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.@media(max-width: 499px) { .videocontentmobile {min-height: 280px; } }@media only screen and (min-width: 500px) and (max-width: 1023px){.videocontentmobile {min-height: 100px;}}@media(min-width: 1024px) { .videocontentmobile {min-height: 250px; } } if (typeof(pubwise) != 'undefined' && pubwise.enabled === true) { pubwise.que.push(function() { pubwise.renderAd('div-gpt-ad-9092914-1'); }); }else{ googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-9092914-1'); googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots['div-gpt-ad-9092914-1']]); }); } It is known as the most updated file system from Microsoft for Windows OS. This system is compatible with flash drives, thumb drives, or memory cards. The full form of exFAT is an extended file allocation table. It has large limits on file and partition sizes. It optimizes exFAT for flash drives.
NTFS is a modern-day file system that is used by default used by Windows. When you install Windows 10 into your PC or laptop, it formats your system drive with the NTFS file system. This file system has the file size and partition size limits, which are so huge that you are not likely to run up with disk space.
Dear Mr. Parrish,I usually use Photoshop in order to design my personal customized folder icons. I make them in rectangular shapes at 512 x 512 (because my monitor is very high resolution and shows them micro! If smaller size), and save them as .PNG files. Then I convert them to .ICO through one of the free online programs.
1.Does Windows read and run folders showed by this size of icons (512×512) without slowing its performance? I ask this because when I connect my HDD to the PC, it shows them Extra-large by default and has to read all 60 folders at a same time together.
Right clicking a folder and selecting properties is usually how you can see how large a folder is, but if your folder size is massive then this takes bloody ages! Not to mention it will only list the top level contents as a whole.
A message with multiple labels in Gmail appears in each corresponding folder in Outlook. It can look like there are multiple copies of the same message in Outlook, and the size of your local mailbox (PST file) can be larger as a result.
Most standard applications, including Windows Explorer (File Explorer), do not work correctly with long path files exceeding 256 characters. Under the file name, Windows understands the entire path, starting with the root of the drive, ending with the last subfolder, and the file name itself.
I have the same problem and I have, over the years, stored 2 GB of software. It may be possible to copy long paths using Teracopy, but the last time I moved a long path, I used 7zip and just stored files in the folder with zero percent compressing into a 7zip file , then copied the whole 7zip file to the drive I wanted and unzip it. Worked for me.
I'm trying to create a batch file to pull the total size and free space of the C:\ drive of servers (locally run script). I also need the output to be easily readable, so bytes is not going to work, so I'm ok with having a command line that creates a temp .vbs file.
In a batch file, you can get the disk size in GB of a specified disk by using a DiskPart script. In this example, I'm setting the specific disk index according to its model name (assuming there's only one like it in the computer). Change the string "SATA Disk" to match your disk drive's model. You can get the model name by running the command "wmic diskdrive get Model, Index" in cmd.
