On paper, the blandly attractive star-crossed lovers of Nabokov's "Lolita" unite a middle-aged man and a teenaged girl. But in Pana's taped-transcript rendition, their teenage liaison is a thinking, feeling, full-feeling set of dramas. As trouble boils up, the story shifts so swiftly that it is never quite clear who's to blame. Pana weaves a narratively potent tale, which flashes its sexual secrets tantalisingly and finally takes a satisfying but violent turn. Nonetheless, Nunn bears equal opportunity with his superb leading male; he delivers a clever "I love you, in a deluded way" and a portrait of sexual longing that qualifies as both affectionate and alluring. Leo Penzo's score adds powerful bite and elegance to the whole package. Vincenzo Lucagneti directed. P N I PCD

In the end, the skateboard tramp who's writing the story seems to have achieved some illumination about the inner workings of a weird and twisted mind.
